02 Oct Multimedia Design Enters BIM
Designing technology together with the space, integrating it from the very start with the other elements of the project, means avoiding clashes and wasted time and resources. That is why we have brought multimedia into BIM, within the same model shared with architects and MEP engineers, from the earliest stages
For years, the architecture world has worked with BIM, Building Information Modeling: a shared three-dimensional model in which every element of a project, from materials to building services, from schedules to costs, is collected and combined digitally. It is a tool widely used by architects, structural engineers and MEP engineers, and it makes the interactions between disciplines visible during the design phase, before anything reaches the construction site. Yet it is still rarely used in multimedia design. As a result, multimedia often enters a project once the key decisions have already been made, and is forced to adapt to spaces that are already defined.
That is why we chose to build solid expertise in BIM, which we now also apply to the multimedia side of our projects, working in the same shared model as architects and MEP engineers.
Adopting BIM has brought both an organisational change and an evolution in the way we approach every project. First of all, BIM has become a meeting point between technology and architecture: within the model, multimedia interacts on equal terms with the other elements (construction, design, building services) and becomes an integral part of the project from the very beginning.
It has also allowed us to become a true partner for our clients. In Italy, BIM is mandatory for public contracts above one million euros, and anyone involved in these projects must be able to work within a structured BIM workflow. BIM expertise makes us a more qualified and more reliable partner for architecture firms and public clients
